Trauma & EMDR therapy for women

AGES 13 AND UP

Your story matters. Find your power to tell it.

You have tried all the things and still can’t seem to shake your symptoms. You feel anxious, exhausted, overwhelmed, tense and alone. Furthermore, you want to find the joy and calm that other people talk about. Or maybe you have no idea what is going on, but know that something isn’t right and feel lost and not like yourself.

Trauma can affect us in many different and unique ways. You might feel scared to tell your story because you don’t know what will happen and are unsure how to get through it. Or maybe you tried before, but the sensations and feelings became too intense, and you didn’t want to lose control or go to “that place.”

When you’ve experienced trauma or difficulties, it can feel like you’ve lost total control, and you can begin to feel powerless. You may seek things and people outside yourself to find some relief, desperate to find a sense of safety. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a place you can start to heal without having to talk about it. Where we have one foot in and one foot out, empowering yourself to sit in the yuck.

Maybe you’re noticing:

  • Confusion, difficulty concentrating.

  • Anger, irritability, mood swings.

  • Anxiety and fear.

  • Guilt, shame, self-blame.

  • Withdrawing from others.

  • Feeling sad or hopeless.

  • Feeling disconnected or numb.

“We are not changing what happened to us. We are changing the way it lives inside us.” - Francine Shapiro

HOW EMDR THERAPY WORKS

EMDR is one way to help with trauma resolution. It is heavily based in research and allows our brains to access these misplaced trauma memories and update them in the brain as something that occurred in the past and is no longer a threat. EMDR gives the brain space to do its job as a natural healer and make sense of the difficult memories. It does not erase the memory, rather updates them in a way that lessens its intensity without having to describe the event in detail.

Through the use of bilateral stimulation (activating both sides of our brain), you can access memories and sensations. You can also provide feedback to the brain to help in its updating process. Client’s love the fact that:

  • You do not have to talk in detail about upsetting events or memories

  • It can require fewer sessions than other kinds of therapy interventions

You can stop suffering from events of the past and reclaim peace in the present.

I’M HERE TO OFFER A SAFE SPACE WHERE YOU CAN FEEL HEARD AND PROCESS YOUR STORY.

FAQS

Common questions about trauma & EMDR therapy

  • Totally! The process is the same only through the computer or tablet. The assessment process will determine your own unique appropriateness for online EMDR (as with any intervention). It is important to communicate how you are feeling during the process as there may be some body language cues that cannot be communicated online. Bilateral stimulation has been adapted to the computer screen and your choice of method will be discussed.
